instrament assisted soft tissue methods (IASTM)

What is IASTM?

This is a manual therapy in which a tool is used to target the muscles and fascia which is a system made up of tightly connected collagen fibers. Fascia weaves itself through out the entire body, wrapping around muscles and even organs. This therapy uses a stainless steel tool to work on breaking up fascial adhesions. This can cause some discomfort during the procedure and some soreness following in the area that was treated.

Therapeutic Effectiveness of IASTM

How does IASTM work?

The stainless steel tools are used to reintroduce microtrauma and induce an inflammatory response to restart the healing process. This microtrauma allows the soft tissue to remodel the damaged tissues. It helps to reabsorb the scar tissue and remodeling of the tissues in a more organized manner, promoting better movement.

After a treatment, it is important to move, stretch, and strengthen the injured area to encourage proper healing from the microtrauma. This therapy essentially re- injures the tissues in a controlled way to allow them to heal properly.

Who should consider IASTM?

A medical professional should do a thorough exam to determine if you are a good candidate for IASTM. Any soft tissue injury (sprain, strain…) can benefit from IASTM. When there is an injury to your soft tissues adhesion and scar tissue builds up as it heals. This is like super glue to your muscles. Cells are laid down in a disorganized manner which can prevent the muscle from lengthening properly.

The number of treatments can vary from person to person but on average it takes 2 treatments per week for about 4-5 weeks. Usually results can be seen by the 4th treatment.
